Nintendo’s Wii (pronounced as we) is proving to be a big favorite among the young and even the old alike. It is a video game console to be used at home. It competes with other gaming gadgets such as Sony’s PS 3 and the Xbox 360 of Microsoft. Only 2 years after it was launched, Wii has already beaten the two other gadgets in terms of sales worldwide as of the end of 2008. It has already won several awards.

The Wii has a wireless controller and a remote that is used like a pointing device to be held by hand and is able to detect movement in 3 dimensions. It also has this unique feature called WiiConnect24 which allows for the receiving of updates and messages via the internet even in standby mode. Wii succeeded Nintendo’s GameCube which games can still be played in Wii.

Wii was slated to be named “Revolution” before Nintendo changed their mind. They stressed that the name of the console is not Nintendo Wii but Wii only. It is the only home console produced by the company that does not carry the company name in the product’s trademark. Its plural form is actually either Wii consoles or Wii systems and not what others usually use, “Wiis”. Although many believed that “Revolution” would have been a better name, the company defended their choice by saying that the present name gives the effect that it is for everyone, being pronounced as “we”. Likewise, it can easily be remembered regardless of the nationality thereby creating no confusion. Also, people will not have to abbreviate the name just like with the other consoles. Nintendo further justified that the name “Revolution” is long and may not be ideal since in is not easy to pronounce in some cultures. They prefer something short, easy to pronounce, direct and distinct.
