Nokia 5530

Nokia 5530 ReviewA new music smartphone has come out from Nokia called the 5530. It is a nice looking model that comes in a variety of colors and a screen that is hard to beat. Take a quick look in this article at the features and abilities of this second-tier phone from Nokia.

Music is the main focus of the Nokia 5530 smartphone. This bright new phone comes with something called ” XpressMusic “. The 5530 even comes with its own four gigabyte microSD card to prove the seriousness of Nokia towards the storage of songs on their new phone. You do not have to feel tied down to using their card, you can install a 32 gigabyte microSD for eight times more storage space. You can do this while the phone is on. This is called “hot-swapping” and comes in handy.

The screen on the 5530 is bright and stands up to viewing under the suns bright light. It is slightly smaller than some other flagship models, but still not bad at 2.9 inches. It is a resistive touchscreen display and has 640 by 360 pixels. The screen is the main aspect of the front of this device. Nokia designed the front of the 5530 to only have a screen and no mechanical buttons. This can wind up being a problem if the smartphone crashes and you need to do a reboot. The volume and on off are on the sides. Using the XpressMusic icon brings up the browser, Ovi icons, photos, and of course the music section. The screen has the accelerometer option so you can view it horizontally or vertically. This comes in handy when typing in some fast text messages to your friends.

The speakers are at the top and bottom and sound good for being so small. The Nokia 5530 supports bluetooth so you can use head phones without cables if you want. The smartphone comes with a pair of cable head phones and a 3.5 inch connector for them. Some other things that Nokia provides with this device is a travel charger, a connectivity cable ( CA-101D ), mini DVD, a stylus for the screen and the user’s guide. All the connectors are at the bottom of the phone.

The 5530 has a decent web browser and is supported by symbian software. If you are near a Wi-Fi hotspot you can take advantage of this feature along with email. The email is supported on all popular protocols. The SMS feature has seventy megabytes of storage available to it so you may never fill it up. You do not have to delete text messages one by one. You are given the ability to delete multiple messages at once, a true blessing to those who get lots of texts.

The phone application on the Nokia 5530 has the regular functions that everyone is accustomed to for cell phones. Call waiting and conference call are available, along with contacts with images. GSM is not a network you can send data over though. This phone has GPRS and EDGE networks. CSD and HSCSD networks are also supported.

The camera is a middle-weight, coming in at 3.2 megapixels. Video is included and you can take videos that are longer than an hour with the 5530. You can edit your videos, but you will have to review them on the phone. There is no connector for preview on a television or other device.

As stated the Nokia 5530 is built upon the idea of being able to travel with your music with you. All popular formats for audio files are supported. This is coming out soon and will be around $300 dollar range. If predictions are right, it may be sold out by Christmas.

Nokia N900 Review

nokia-n900Nokia has had plenty of good introductions in the past and now they have come up with one more; the N900. The N900 is the dream-come-true for power mobile users. Take a look at this brief review of the N900 and see if it does not beat what you have been using.

The first thing you notice about the Nokia N900 is that it is unobtrusive. Do not let the mild exterior fool you. Inside the package is about as much memory as perhaps two “regular” smartphones. The N900 is the newest flagship for Nokia and rightly so. The N900 is sometimes known as a handheld computing device. I would put it right up there with netbooks. The last Nokia flagship, the N97 was a bit anemic in the memory department. The N900 has no such problems. The processor is an ARM Cortex-A8 600 Megahertz ( Mhz ) powerhouse with its own 256 Megabytes of Random Access Memory ( RAM ) and 768 Megabytes of virtual memory. There is also one Gigabyte of application memory. There is 32 Gigabytes of integrated storage which is upgradeable to up to 48 Gigabytes with a MicroSD card. Your applications will not be running slow while you use the N900.

One of the bigger questions for most mobile users concerns Wi-Fi. Yes, the N900 has Wi-fi capability. It also has bluetooth ( 2.1 ) and HSDPA connectivity. This means triband WCDMA 900/1700/2100 and quadband GSM. It is slated to start running on the T-Mobile networks. One very nice feature is the FM transmitter. You can take advantage of all that memory space to store music and broadcast it to your car radio with the built-in FM transmitter of the N900.

In the visual department this N900 is no slouch. It comes with a five Megapixel camera. The camera is video-ready and has a cover that slides shut to protect the lens while you are not taking photos or video. That is an important feature because the lens includes Carl Zeiss optics. The screen is a resistive-touch model that is a WVGA model. It is 3.5 inches in size, equal to the iPhone. The N900 has the same appearance of the iPhone also, at first glance.

The greatest feature of the N900 is the one inside; the operating system. It uses a version of Linux called Maemo. This is a true computing device that also allows you to make phone calls. The N900 uses a browser made by Mozilla, the same folks who make Firefox. What can you do with this Maemo operating system ? For one, you can customize your “desktop” to however you like it. With Maemo, multi-tasking is made easy. You can make contact with your friends or family using Gtalk, Ovi, Skype and other IM friends, and do it from the same page. Automatic geotagging allows you to take photos and know exactly where it was you snapped them. Maemo will turn an ugly GPS tag into something understandable automatically. These are just some of the abilities of the Maemo system that form the core of the new N900.

The appearance of the Nokia N900 is right up there with the “big boys”. It comes with a keyboard slide-out that has directional arrows, which is convenient for choosing items from the screen. You can be sure you will be getting some looks when you pull this out of your pocket. If you are one of those mobile “power users” this is the next toy you will want to get your hands on. 597

Palm Pre Review

palm_prePalm is cooking something hot for the public this first half with their newest addition to the realm of telecommunication. The Palm Pre smart phone, a new breed of Palm devices running with WebOS, is expected to hit the market with massive sales the moment it is made available to the public by early first half this year.

Let’s take a glimpse of this buddy and discover its distinct properties before it makes its way to the stores. After carefully evaluating both the hardware and software components of the smart phone, we can conclude that this is going to be the next sought-after gadget after the iPhone.

Palm Pre is running with the Linux based WebOS operating system developed by Palm for its series of smart phones with touch screen capabilities. The operating system alone makes the phone robust, fitted with programs that merge applications and functionalities within the device, and not to mention its portability to run web based applications implementing different web technologies. We’ll get into the stuffs working behind the scene later in this review.

This curved edge phone weighs 4.8 ounces and measures 59.5mm in width, 100.5mm in height and 16.95mm thick. Palm Pre houses features that every mobile phone user wants- entertainment center, GPS, basic messaging/call, Internet capabilities, digital camera, decent storage space, and multi tasking. Unlike other touch sensitive devices, Pre has multi touch functionality that senses multiple spots with in the screen and the gesture area.

The multi touch LCD screen measures 3.1” with a 320 X 480 resolution more than enough to produce crisp images through a mobile phone. A 3mega pixel camera with LED flash is perfectly suited at the back providing users with advanced digital photography from their phone. On the upper portion of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack compatible to most portable headphones.

And now the controversial multi touch gesture area which is claimed to be patented by Apple. Sending commands to the unit is made convenient and more, it can be done single handedly through the gesture area which is fully multi touched based similar to that of iPhone. Many feared that this multi touch gesture area may cause Palm to lose on Pre if Apple will take legal actions with regard to its patent.

So what’s powering this technology warehouse? Well, Pre is just driven by Texas Instruments’ OMAP 3430 processor, the first smart phone to endure the speed and power of the processor’s computing capabilities. It is also packed with an 8GB flash storage, about 8% or .6GB of the entire storage space is used for the phone’s built-in software applications including the OS and 7.4GB available for the user’s data, a decent storage space to fill you an entertainment room.

A built-in accelerometer automatically shifts image views from portrait to landscape and vice versa. They say that Pre has a lot in common with Apple’s iPhone, but in reality, Pre has more advance features than the iPhone. Use Pre as a modem for your laptop through a Bluetooth connection or connect to the Internet directly from your phone from a WiFi spot. Connecting the unit to your computer is possible through a MicroUSB 2.0 connector.

Like conventional phones, Palm has allocated Pre a space for a physical keyboard for input. Revealing the hidden QWERTY keyboard only takes a slight vertical slide of the phone. Other controls include a side volume controller and a top and bottom buttons used for various functionalities.

Ever heard of wireless charging? Well, Pre has such capability through the Palm’s very own Touchstone Wireless charging dock making an innovation with battery recharging. However, the Touchtone charging dock is sold separately from the unit.

On the software side, WebOS has a lot to brag. First, applications are organized through the use of “cards” or panel entries that represent the applications itself. A simple touch on the card can launch the whole application and allow users to take control over it. With this implemented, the phone can perform multiple tasks at a given time without compromising other functions or interrupting other applications. Composing emails, viewing images, or choosing which song to play can be done one at a time, but can be processed by the phone as ones.

There is more to organizing applications through Pre. To keep users in control of their electronic activities and accounts, Synergy is also embedded with the operating system. It integrates multiple electronic communication mediums and contact information like emails, social networking applications, instant messenger and calendars. The application organizes and links all contact information and presents a user with a single display consisting previously made conversations.

A Universal Search menu is also an attraction to WebOS as part of its main function. This allows a user to search the content of the phone from contact information down to text messages. For instances where the content you are trying to locate is not available through your mobile phone. Pre will help you fetch that information through the Internet with few additions to your search options. Online information is feed through a multi touch browser that supports the gesture area. Now searching from your mobile phone is made easy.

Despite all its alluring features, Pre has some limitations with its design and capabilities. Among these things include video recording. This feature will not be present with Pre, but will hopefully be fitted on its future releases using WebOS. Also, since WebOS runs on a different environment and a totally different platform, applications designed for other Palm devices may not be compatible with Pre.

Another important factor missing with Pre is the lack of a touch screen keyboard. Users may expect to do all the typing through its built-in QWERTY keyboard. In addition, any opt to increase the storage capacity of the phone may seem impossible. Users will have to stick with the built-in storage capacity for this new breed.

Currently, the phone will be bearing Sprint logo as its exclusive network carrier. However, the manufacturer is positive to develop later versions of WebOS based smart phones available for different networks including offshore. The only question left for us is, “Will Pre empowers iPhone and other smart phones?” This can be answered the moment the ball starts rolling for its dominion.

When I bought the iPhone, I was truly initially sorry that I did. One is because of the fact that I had to move from Verizon to AT&T to use the phone. I thought of having the phone unlocked, but to pay extra was not something I was planning to do. So I just switched my subscriber just so I can use this sleek and trendy phone.

I got hooked on the iPhone a few months of its release, as it was touted to be a cellular phone, an iPod and a PDA wrapped in one little neat bundle of gadget love.

When I got the phone, it took a while for me to get use of the keyboard less interface. Usual smart phones have these mini keyboards below the huge screen but the iPhone deleted that entirely. When you get used to this set up, it becomes second nature to text using the phone but give yourself around 3 weeks to a month and a half to get used to the touch software.

A great thing about the iPhone is its very visual voicemail system. Instead of calling your mailbox, the iPhone gives you a list of your voicemails, making you see the name of the sender and the time of message. You can skip a message and go to a message left earlier by just tapping on that recording file.

The iPhone, weighing at 135 grams, comes in two memory sizes, one at 8 gigabyte, and the other in 4 gigabyte. If you are planning to really use the iPhone for all your multimedia and mobile phone ease, best t buy the one with a larger memory.

I currently have a love-hate relationship with my iPhone. And why is that? Well obviously, there was time that I rejoiced with the fact that I bought this third generation phone and at the same time, there are times that I am infinitely regretful on why I spent my hard earned dollars for this phone.

Actually, it may be more succinct to call my relationship with my iPhone a hate-love relationship because the first time I bought the phone, I was not too happy because I had to switch from being a Verizon subscriber to an AT&T subscriber (also known as Cingular). Then I had some worries because I kept on experiencing minor glitches like the camera won’t “shift” accordingly the way it should, not unless I shake it a couple of times. Minor bugs like that initially got to me.

But then, my love for the phone grew due to some recent updates that were released for the phone. Here are some of the iPhone updates that I have that make me love the phone more and more.

• The Apps Store just recently released tons of games and applications that are so helpful on the go, whether I have to finish a client’s spreadsheet, or I am bored out of my wits while waiting a delayed connecting flight.
• The minor glitch called the “Blue Screen” (happens when the phone is connected to a Vista PC) was also remedied.
• The load time of the contacts list was also improved. Short message sending timeframe has also improved.
