The Iphone Effect

Before Apple introduced us to the Iphone, we had a poor selection of mobile phones (and that’s an understatement). The slim choices we did have can be classified into three categories: the clamshell simple phone aka “the starter phone”, a smartphone that wasn’t so smart, and of course the “media” phones. These were the types of pathetic choices we had in the pre-Iphone era. But once Jobs decided to drop the ball and introduce us to his newest secret project, the web was abuzz about the possibilities of this new wonderphone.

Iphone arrives

The Iphone debuted in the US on June 27, 2007. This day would go down in history as the day the mobile phone market changed. From this day on, competitors couldn’t get by with rehashes of the previous year’s model. No, they had to pretty up their offerings and add more functionality to even stay relevant in the post-Iphone era. There was no more room for slackers and the competition was feeling the heat.

Clone wars

Apple’s instant success had competitors fearing the worse. So they did what all desperate and failing companies do: follow the leader. Nowadays, every phone looks like a wannabe Iphone. The only part they haven’t nailed yet is how to fit so much funtionality in such a slim and sexy device. They have tried: Sprint (Samsung Instinct), Verizon (LG Dare), & T-Mobile (G1 Phone). Admittedly, the competitors are getting close to Iphone’s level of form and function. Verizon Wireless recently introduced the Blackberry Storm, an elegant multi-touch screen Blackberrry with all the trimmings. Yes, it even has an accelerometer (you know when you turn the phone sideways it tilts the picture on screen). The G1 by Google carried by T-Mobile also poses major implications with Google’s mobile OS debut known simply as “Android”. Yet, with all these new offerings, Apple still hasn’t been dethroned. For now, it looks like the crown is still safe

Still The Leader

Even with a flurry of copycats, the Iphone has managed to keep it’s popularity and dominance as the hottest phone around. Check the numbers, this baby has sold millions of units. It doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon either. Apple’s continuously improving the already robust phone. They recently introduced the 3G Iphone (and dropped the price to $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB) to stay competitive in a market they have conquered ever since they entered it. The consumers now have a multitude of options thanks to Apple’s brave foray into an industry they had never set foot in. Steve Jobs can rest assured that the efforts of his (once tiny) Cupertino-based company have guaranteed his place in history as a brilliant innovator with a bold vision: the Iphone. The phone that changed the game.

A new contender

The Blackberry Storm has many mobile consumers looking forward to the future. This new multimedia phone by Research in Motion is dubbed (like many new touch-screens nowadays) as an “Iphone Killer”. The potential of the phone has many Verizon consumers feeling excited and hopeful for the future. Their beloved carrier finally has a worthy contender for the Iphone throne. The big “V” is the exclusive network of the Blackberry Storm (A move that makes sense considering they have the largest Blackberry consumer-base). Whether it will dethrone the Iphone is irrelevant. The Storm shines on it’s own.

Features & more features

Although it hasn’t hit stores just yet, the Storm will come jam-packed with more features than you can throw an angry Apple fan at. Well maybe not, but the point is that this baby has almost all the bases covered (well expect for Wi-Fi). However, the Storm does have just about every other radio besides Wi-Fi. These radios are: CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA. This ensures the Storm’s usability (even internationally). The “Wow” factors don’t stop there. The screen is a rather sizeable 3.25 inches. The resolution is also pretty high for a mobile phone at 480×360 pixels. The camera is a generous 3.2 megapixels and comes with flash. The phone is expandable to 8GB and comes with 1GB of onboard memory. The phone also comes with the ability to hear your phone calls more clearly without interference throught the use of “enhanced background noise cancellation”. The web experience is almost as pleasing as the Iphone. The phone is multi-touch and comes with an accelerometer (tilt the phone and the picture tilts too). RIM says that the whole screen is one button and it employs a click technology that they are dubbing “clickthrough”. This means that when you push on a button you must wait for it to pop back up ensuring you that the button has been “clicked”. This mechanism gives typing on this device an authentic feel and it is an ingenious implementation on RIM’s part. This technology alone should set the Storm apart from the pack (including the Iphone).

The coming “Storm”

The Storm should be welcomed by even the staunchest Blackberry purists. That’s because they have kept most of the Blackberry OS and experience intact. The changes they made were to streamline the OS with a touch-screen user interface. They also added in alot of extra functionality (including Verizon’s own proprietary GPS and VCast services) and made it look uber-sexy to fit today’s changing form of phone aesthetics There hasn’t been a release date set yet (although some analysts predict a mid-November release). This sexy new phone by the Blackberry team is a welcome addition to an ever growing lineup of next-gen phones. We will soon see if it lives up to the hype. But you know the old saying: it’s always quiet before the Storm…

It started with the 2-Way

Ever since the early days of the two-way phone, we have been fascinated with the ability to communicate with each other from remote locations. “Mobileers” as they were affectionately referred to made the two-way the first popular mobile device ever. It originally was installed in automobiles then we felt the need to be well..mobile. Around the early 1950’s we had our first signs of phones that were actually mobile. This sparked a new trend with the “bag phone”, a phone that you can detach and attach to your car through the cigarette car lighter, Motorola’s first mobile effort spawned the “walkie-talkie” and it became very popular as a mobile way of communication. All these new inventions made one realization clear: the mainstream loves to stay in touch.

The first mobile phone

The first commercial mobile phone arrived in 1981. It came in the form of the “Motorola Dynex 8000X”. Sure it was almost as big as a VCR, but hey you could call from anywhere and that had many excited. This phone spawned an array of copycats in the 1st Generation of mobile phones. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that the second generation of smaller, & more powerful mobile phones arrived. The new breed was here.

2G”

With the new generation of phones came a new generation of radiowaves that could carry their cellular signals. These Second Generation radios aka “2G” were: GSM, CDMA, & TDMA (to name a few). These new phone systems had the capability to process faster transmissions and phone to network signaling. The newer systems also meant that newer phones were smaller and faster than the previous gen due to battery and energy efficient advances in the mobile phone industry. These new smaller phones became standard and the “brick” phone soon become a forgone memory.

Present Day

Nowadays, we are pretty much spoiled with choices. NTT DoComo was the first to market with “3G” networks in Japan on October 1, 2001. The U.S. was soon to follow. The “3G” networks are blazingly fast compared to previous networks. Our mobile phone experience has dramatically changed as well. In fact, some insiders are now calling the modern day mobile phone a “convergence device” . This term was previously coined by the guy behind the game-changing Apple Iphone: Steve Jobs. The reason it’s being labeled as such is the fact that we can now surf the web, watch TV, voice-navigate our road trips, create a resume, film videos, take pics and (did I mention) make phone calls with our new touch-screen mobile phones. Yes, we’ve come a long way since the two-way. Ahh the wonders of technology.

Revolution of Playstation

A Playstation is a 32-bit video game console in the fifth generation. Way back in 1994, Sony Computer Entertainment was the very first company to get into Playstation series. The Playstation passion started with the hand-held gaming devices that had consoles as successors. First one of them was Net Yaroze and then started in series the yet another versions like “PS One” followed by-Pocket Station, Play station 2, Slimline PS 2, Play Station Portable (PSP), PSX, and Playstation 3.

By March 2005, the madden of a Playstation is such that the combined sales of Playstation and PS One were over 100 million consoles. In the history of Video gaming in the world, the Playstation has recorded one of the longest production runs. Sony announced the end of the Playstation production in March 2006.

The PlayStation was launched in Japan on December 3, 1994 and North America on September 9, 1995.The launch price in the American market was us$299 and Sony enjoyed a very successful launch with titles of almost every genre.

The PlayStation was also able to get interest with a series of campaigns of advertising. Many of the ads released at the time of launch were full of ambiguous content. This rendered many gamers rapidly debating their meanings.

During its production run, the PlayStation went through a number of variants, each accompanied by a change in the part number. The most notable change was the gradual reduction in the number of external connectors on the unit. This started very early on only.

Sony’s successor to the PlayStation is the backward compatible with its predecessor , he PlayStation 2, in that it can play almost every PlayStation game. This was done by embedding the PS one’s most important parts inside the PlayStation 2 design. The PlayStation 2 actually contains the original PlayStation processor, allowing games to run exactly as they do on the PlayStation unlike emulators that run on a PC. For

PlayStation 2 games this processor which is called the IOP is used for input and output like memory cards, DVD drive, network, and hard drive. Like its predecessor, the PS 2 is based on hardware developed by Sony itself.

The third generation of the PlayStation was launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America which is known as the PlayStation 3 (abbreviated PS3). The PS 3 was initially backward compatible with almost all games that were originally made for PS 1, but due to the remotion of some components after the creation of the 40GB version whose capability is limited now to emulation. In PAL territories and later shipments in North America and Japan (40GB versions and after), however, the PlayStation 3 is not backward compatible in terms of hardware and so supports significantly fewer PS 2 games.

A PlayStation motherboard -MIPS R3000A-compatible 32bit with a RISC chip running at around 33.8688 MHz. The chip is made by LSI Logic Corp. with license from SGI. The chip also contains the Geometry Transformation Engine and the Data Decompression Engine.

Thus Playstation is contributing in every area which you can think of be it business, ad, creativity or elsewhere.

The current Nokia Internet tablet N800 has integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for accessing Internet of the go. It also has a great browser which is used to access the Internet. However, it does not have a 3G support. Therefore, Nokia promised that next model of Nokia Tablet will be coming with 3G support.

Current model also has an in-built camera with great video capabilities and has better performance as compared to any Nokia handset. Its equipped with sleek and slim design with great looking screen and high performance processor. Nokia has also added VoIP support and instant messaging applications. There are dual expansion slots and RSS news reader which come unique to Nokia’s Tablet.

However, the Nokia’s Tablet N800’s video playback performance is not up to the mark and there is no PC synchronization. Realizing this, Nokia has announced that the next model will support 720p videos and shader based games. However, Nokia should remember that video features don’t count much to many people and so they should not charge heavily for this feature.

N800 is still a great gadget and all it needs is 3G support and PC synch. The spec is also good and there is not much improvement needed in specs. N800 has Internet Tablet 2007 OS and 128 MB RAM. Nokia also announced that the next model will be powered by TI OMAP 3 processor for better performance.

They clarified that OMAP 3 will be capable of playing 720p videos and games with shaders. It will also be capable of handling 12 mega pixel camera. Therefore, we can expect the new improved N800 soon. Nokia said that the new model will be working on Linux and would be more stable as compared to any current handset. So, lets cross our fingers and wait for new and powerful Nokia N800 3G.

Leading mobile device producer Apple has some difficulties of marketing their products in EU these days, as you know, Apple’s new generation mobile devices (iPhone 3G and iPod) have some differences then rival products. The most important difference is internal battery system. For example, when your iPods batteries usage time decrease, you send it to company to replace a new battery. This process is required by Apple. This process was criticized by users and most of hardware interpreters.

On these days, there is bad news for Apple Company from European Union Countries. According to this, Apple maybe won’t sell iPhone 3G in EU Countries because of some trade directives about cell phones.

In European Union Countries, there is a effective directive which bans internal batteries and requires easily replaceable external batteries when user needs to change. Main purpose of this strict directive is to prevent monopoly or oligopoly of mobile electronic communication device producers. Also another vision of this directive is to facilitate to reach replacement parts of mobile devices. In this context, according to EU Trade Requirements this is opposite of Apple’s internal battery concept. In this severe competition media, Apple started to review their mobile concept and started to build a new crisis management policy.

According to a news on Apple Insider, Apple invented internal batteries to pretend pollution of toxic substances and electronic wastes of old batteries. All electronic wastes cause harm to human health over long term. Apple designed their internal battery system to obviate these kinds of pollution. This was their research and development policy. When an Apple Products batteries physical life gets shorten, owner of that device has to send that product to Apple. Apple required this strict rule for changing batteries. Another purpose of this rule is to pretend related industry.

With these environmental cautions which Apple mentioned, company expects to sell their products in European Union markets without changing their concept. But Apple started to prepare worst case scenario about this problem. Apple notwithstanding doesn’t want to change their iPhone concept, battery design of iPhone 3G may change in European Union Countries. Apple restarted a new research and development process and brainstorming about this issue. Apple don’t wants to lose European cell phone market.

Apple may necessarily change their concept to market iPhone 3G. Furthermore strict European Union trade laws which are preventing monopolies and oligopolies may cause concept changing for iPhones which are sought by consumers.

I myself, on these severe competition days on mobile phone market, Apple company will change iPhone’s design a little bit for not being in the red. Otherwise 3G mobile operations of Apple Company will bear a loss in EU Market and this cause a severe problem for company liquidity. Presently the markets are shrinking, in these conditions a mass authorization problem triggers a severe economic problem for Apple Company. Apple should solve this problem, if they can’t, they have to change their concept to survive in this wild economic jungle.
